EXPLANATION OF THE LĀMIYYAH OF IBN TAYMIYYAH (t.me/madrasatuna) LINE 6: The author, may Allāh have mercy on him, says: وَأَقُـولُ قَـالَ الـلَّـهُ جَـلَّ جَـلَالُـهُ And I say, "Allāh The Mighty and Majestic said" وَالْـمُـصْـطَـفَى الْـهَـادِي وَلَا أَتَـأَوَّلُ "and the chosen one - the guide (i.e. the Prophet ﷺ) said", without misinterpreting 1. In this line, the author begins to clarify the 'Aqīdah of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamā'ah pertaining to the divine names and attributes of Allāh. 2. In short, the belief of Ahlus sunnah wal Jamā'ah in this regard is as follows: BELIEF 7: ᴀғғɪʀᴍɪɴɢ ᴇᴠᴇʀʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴀʟʟᴀ̄ʜ ʜᴀs ᴀғғɪʀᴍᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ ʜɪᴍsᴇʟғ ᴀs ᴡᴇʟʟ ᴀs ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴡʜɪᴄʜ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴘʜᴇᴛ ﷺ ʜᴀs ᴀғғɪʀᴍᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ ʜɪᴍ (ᴀʟʟᴀ̄ʜ) ᴏғ ɴᴀᴍᴇs ᴀɴᴅ ᴀᴛᴛʀɪʙᴜᴛᴇs, ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ᴅɪsᴛᴏʀᴛɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ᴍᴇᴀɴɪɴɢ (ᴛᴀḥʀɪ̄ғ), ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ɴᴇɢᴀᴛɪɴɢ/ᴅᴇɴʏɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ (ᴛᴀ'ṭɪ̄ʟ), ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ᴅɪsᴄᴜssɪɴɢ ʜᴏᴡ ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴀʀᴇ (ᴛᴀᴋʏɪ̄ғ), ᴀɴᴅ ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ʟɪᴋᴇɴɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ ᴛᴏ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄʀᴇᴀᴛɪᴏɴ (ᴛᴀᴍᴛʜɪ̄ʟ) 3. Allāh's Names and Attributes are tawqīfī, i.e. they are limited to what is mentioned in the Qur’ān and authentic Sunnah, so there is no room for any qiyās (analogy) or ijtihād (deduction). 4. "without distorting" (وَلَا أَتَأَوَّل) The word ta'wīl has several meanings, however, here it means: to alter a word's apparent meaning without any contextual clue or evidence. This form of ta'wīl is also known as 'tahrīf' (distortion/misinterpretation). 5. This form of ta'wīl is not permissible, because it is speaking about Allāh without knowledge, and Allāh has forbidden us from speaking without knowledge. Allāh ﷻ said: {وَلَا تَقۡفُ مَا لَیۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمٌ} "Do not follow what you have no ˹sure˺ knowledge of." [Sūrat Al-Isrā' 36] And He ﷻ also said: {قُلۡ إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ رَبِّیَ ٱلۡفَوَ ٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ ... وَأَن تَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ} Say, “My Lord has only forbidden open and secret indecencies...and attributing to Allāh what you do not know.” [Sūrat Al-A'rāf 33] 6. Therefore, it is not permissible to attribute anything to Allāh other than what He has attributed to Himself in His Book or what His Messenger ﷺ has attributed to Him in the authentic Sunnah. In the same way, it is not permissible to deny anything that Allāh has attributed to Himself in His Book or what His Messenger ﷺ has attributed to Him in the authentic Sunnah. That is because these are from the affairs of the unseen, which the human mind cannot comprehend, so we must adhere to what is mentioned in the texts without adding or subtracting anything.
