Hopefully you've had enough time to reflect over the hadeeth of Qabeesah ibn Mukhaariq posted yesterday.
Here are some Points of benefit derived from the hadeeth: 1⃣. The base rule in Islam is that begging/asking for donations is haraam Sheikhul Islam ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah said: ((وقد تواترت الأحاديث عن النبي ﷺ بتحريم مسألة الناس إلا عند الضرورة)) “There are multitudes of hadiths relayed from the Prophet ﷺ prohibiting begging - except in the case of Dharoorah (dire necessity).” [مجموع الفتاوى (8/538)] He also said: ((أصل السؤال محرَّم في المسجد وخارج المسجد إلا لضرورة)) “The origin of begging is that it is haraam, whether that occurs inside or outside the masjid - unless it is done out of Dharoorah.” [نقلاً عن غذاء الألباب للسفاريني (2/ 267)] 2⃣. Islam seeks to preserve people's honour, that is why it encourages with abstinence/self sufficiency (عفة) and contentment (الغنى), whereas begging falls contrary to that objective 3⃣. Begging is permitted only in exceptional circumstances (Dharoorah) * Dharoorah (dire necessity) refers to a life or death situation where one has no other option but to consume haraam in order to save their life. An Example of this is eating dead meat for one who is on the brink of starvation. [الموافقات للشاطبي (2/8)، شرح مسلم للنووي (1/22)] 4⃣. Aside from Dharoorah, the only other case where begging is allowed is when seeking financial assistance from the ruler/ those in authority, and even in this case it is better to refrain from doing so unless there is a pressing need (eg. Claiming benefits due to unemployment, disability, being a single mother, etc.) The Prophet ﷺ said: ((إن المسألة كَدٌّ يَكُدُّ بها الرجل وجهه، إلاّ أن يسأل الرجل سلطانا أو في أمر لابد منه)) “Begging is a cut that a person inflicts upon his face; except for asking a ruler, or under the stress of circumstances from which there is no escape.” [Reported by Tirmidhi, who classified it as Hasan Sahih]. 5⃣. In the case of Dharoorah, a person is allowed to request financial aid only until the need is uplifted, after which begging becomes haraam. For example: if the required amount is £100, he can only request this amount, thus every penny requested above this is Haraam. 6⃣. Even though Qabeesah had a right to seek donation, the Prophet ﷺ still reminded him of this hadeeth in order to stress to him and the rest of the Ummah that this is not a light matter 7⃣. Three reliable witnesses are required if one's need for donation is not apparent, but if his affair is obvious, like the case of one whose business has burnt down, there's no need for witnesses ____ References: https://binbaz.org.sa/fatwas/6877/%D8%AD%D9%83%D9%85-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%B3%D9%88%D9%84 https://youtu.be/6sy81KtCXjk https://youtu.be/YZc9fV79ebE Continue reading ⤵️
