1. The Manhaj (methodology) of the Prophets as per the Qurʿān is to invoke mercy and forgiveness ONLY for the believing men & women
2. It is not permissible to invoke mercy and forgiveness upon a disbeliever, male or female, living or dead - according to the concensus (Ijmaa')
3. If one was to invoke mercy and forgiveness upon a disbeliever, it will be of no avail. Allah Almighty said:
{ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَسۡتَغۡفَرۡتَ لَهُمۡ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ لَن یَغۡفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡۚ }
“It makes no difference whether you ask forgiveness for them or not, Allah will not forgive them...”
[Surah Al-Munâfiqûn: 6]
4. The Jews would intentionally sneeze and say Alhmadulillah in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ to draw him into saying Yarhamukallah (may Allah have mercy upon you), but the Prophet ﷺ recognised their plot, so instead he would ask Allah to guide them (yahdeekumullah)
[hadeeth Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari, Reported by Tirmithi]
This hadeeth shows the permissibility of seeking guidance for the disbelievers as they are upon clear misguidance. However, it is not permissible to seek forgiveness, mercy, Aafiyah (wellbeing), etc., for a disbeliever.
