The most beloved names عبدالله & عبدالرحمن It was narrated by Abu Dawood on the authority of Abu Wahb al-Jushami radhiyallahu anhu, who said: The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: ((أَحَبُّ الأَسْمَاءِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَأَصْدَقُهَا حَارِثٌ وَهَمَّامٌ)) “The most beloved of names to Allaah are ‘Abdullaah and ‘Abdur-Rahmaan, and the most truthful are Haarith and Hammaam [these names both refer to one who is always doing something, whether good or bad], and the worst are Harb and Murrah [meaning ‘war’ and ‘bitterness’ respectively].” [Classed as 'Saheeh' by Sheikh Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood] Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy on him, said, as in his collection of verdicts and treatises (25/277): ”كل اسم مضاف إلى الله فهو خير مما لم يضف إلى الله عز وجل وأشرف ، وأفضله ما أضيف إلى الله أو إلى الرحمن ، بالحديث الذي ذكرته آنفاً ، ثم ما كان من الأسماء أقرب إلى الصدق ، قال النبي عليه الصلاة والسلام: (أصدق الأسماء حارث وهمام) ، يعني ما يولد الإنسان إلا وهو حارث وهمام ، فإذا سمي بحارث أو همام صار مطابقاً تماماً للواقع.“ “Every name that is ascribed to Allah (i.e. names starting with ‘Abd) is better than what is not ascribed to Allah, the Almighty and Honorable, and the best of these is that which is ascribed to 'Allah' (i.e. 'Abdullaah) or to 'Ar-Rahmaan' (i.e. 'Abdur-Rahmaan), based on the hadith that I mentioned above. Thereafter, whatever name is closer to reality/truthfulness, as the Prophet ﷺ said: 'the truest of names are Haarith and Hammaam,' and no person is born except that he is Harith and Hammam; so if he is called Haarith or Hammaam, this fully reflects the reality.”
