BENEFIT 93: Meaning of 'Sallaa' & 'Salaah'
The word 'Salla' (صَلَّى) comes from 'Salaah' (صَلَاة), and 'Salaah' according to most of the scholars of the Arabic language means, 'Du'aa' (دُعَاء) (supplication) [as ibnul Qayyim stated in Jilaa'il Afhaam].
Similarly, Ibn Qudamah rahimahullah (D 620) wrote in Al-Mughni:
"As-Salah according to the (Arabic) language means Ad-Du'aa (supplication).
Allah the most high said:
{وَصَلِّ عَلَیۡهِمۡۖ إِنَّ صَلَوٰتَكَ سَكَنࣱ لَّهُمۡۗ}
"and pray for them- your prayer is a comfort to them." [Surah At-Tawbah: 103]
meaning, supplicate for them.
Also, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
((إذا دُعي أحدكم فليجب، فإن كان مفطرا فليطعم، وإن كان صائما فلْيُصَلِّ.))
"If one of you is invited let him respond; if he is not fasting let him eat, and if he is fasting let him supplicate (Salli)."
As for the legislative meaning, then it refers to the actions (of prayer) that are well known. So if there is a command or ruling mentioned in the Sharee'ah relating to Salaah, what is intended according to the apparent meaning is the legislative definition." [end of quote]
NOTE:
* When Salah is ascribed to Allah (eg. Salla-llhaahu), what is intended is:
"ثناء الله عليه عند الملائكة"
'Allah praising someone to the angels.'
[Al-Bukhari reported this athar of Abul 'Aaliyah in his Sahih]
* And when Salah is ascribed to the angels, it refers to them seeking forgiveness (istighfaar) for someone; as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said in the authentic hadeeth (graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani in his checking of Sunan Abi Dawud):
((وَالْمَلاَئِكَةُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى أَحَدِكُمْ مَا دَامَ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ الَّذِي صَلَّى فِيهِ يَقُولُونَ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ اللَّهُمَّ تُبْ عَلَيْهِ))
"The angels invoke Salah on one of you so long as he remains seated in the place he prayed, saying: O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him; O Allah, accept his repentance."
