BENEFIT 85: TYPES OF SHAFA'AH
Shafā'ah is divided into two types:
1. Shafā'ah related to the worldly life
2. Shafā'ah related to the Hereafter
The worldly Shafā'ah is divided into three, and each one is either permissible or impermissible:
1. Personal Shafā'ah (seeking Shafā'ah for one's own self)
2. Assistive Shafā'ah (seeking Shafā'ah on behalf of someone else in order to bring about good or repel evil)
3. Financial Shafā'ah (giving financial assistance to someone in order for them to ransom themself)
Note: it is not permissible to seek Shafā'ah in order to prevent a legal penalty from being applied (such as chopping off the thief's hand) - that is if the case has already been taken to court, but if the case has yet to be taken to court, then most scholars say that it is allowed to seek Shafā'ah.
