BENEFIT 60: HOW DID THE SALAF WAKE UP FOR FAJR WHEN THERE WERE NO ALARM CLOCKS BACK THEN? On the authority of Zayd ibn Khālid Al-Juhani radhiyallāhu 'anhu that the Prophet ﷺ said: ((لَا تَسُبُّوا الدِّيكَ فَإِنَّهُ يُوقِظُ لِلصَّلَاةِ)) “Do not curse the rooster for it wakens (people) for prayer.” [Abu Dawūd]. Sheikh 'Uthaymīn raḥimahullāh commented on this ḥadīth in his explanation of Riyāḍh Aṣ-Ṣāliḥīn, saying: “The ديك (rooster) is a male chicken. It has a sound that wakens the one sleeping. Some of them scream on time; at prayer times. The Prophet ﷺ instructed those who hear its scream to ask Allāh from His bounty; [he ﷺ said:] 'When you hear the sound of the rooster, say: أسأل الله من فضله I ask Allāh from His Bounty; because it has seen an angel.' [Bukhāri (3303) & Muslim (2729)] Some roosters call to prayer at the start of the time, or just before the time; so they wake people up for prayer. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ forbade cursing it due to this distinguishing feature. Likewise, it is forbidden to kill ants due to ant which directed its sisters to escape from Sulaimān peace be upon him. [see Sūrah An-Naml - Āyah 18] This is from the complete justice of Allāh Almighty, that animals which serve the servants have greater value over others. Cursing a rooster is something that may occur from some people, because maybe he is frightened by his voice while he is sleeping, so he curses and insults it, and this is forbidden, because the Prophet ﷺ said: ((لَا تَسُبُّوا الدِّيكَ)) (Do not curse the rooster). And in this ḥadīth there is evidence that a person should employ something to wake him up for prayer, such as an alarm clock. A person is required to utilise these clocks to wake them up for prayer at the time where he is able to catch the prayer. Many people are negligent in this matter; they go to sleep relying on the fact that they will wake up whenever they want, but they are overwhelmed by sleep. If you know this from yourself, then set yourself an alarm that will alert you to prayer; because 'anything which is required to accomplish an obligation is itself obligatory,' and you will be rewarded for this. رابط المادة: http://iswy.co/e3u4g
