BENEFIT 59: A PRINCIPLE THAT REDUCES DIFFERING - if applied correctly I heard Sheikh Abū Bilāl ḥafidhahullāh mention the following principle on more than one occasion: PRINCIPLE: الخلاف في الفروع يرتفع في الاقتداء Disagreement in secondary (fiqhi) matters are removed during emulation (when following someone's lead) NOTE: this rule/principle only applies to Ikhtilāf Afhām (differences of understanding), and it is very restricted! For example: If you hold the opinion that eating camel meat invalidates wuḍhū, are you permitted to pray behind an imām who has just eaten camel meat; because according to your opinion (and this is the correct opinion in-shā-Allāh), he doesn't have wuḍhū, although to him, he believes that eating camel meat does not invalidate wuḍhū. Let's apply the principle: Based on the above principle, it is permissible to emulate/ pray behind this imām, because the disagreement here is in a secondary matter (fiqh).
