BENEFIT 49: SWEARING BY OTHER THAN ALLฤ€H IS AN ACT OF SHIRK! It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar radhiyallฤhu 'anhu said, the Prophet ๏ทบ said: ((ุฃูŽู„ุงูŽ ู…ูŽู†ู’ ูƒูŽุงู†ูŽ ุญูŽุงู„ููู‹ุง ููŽู„ุงูŽ ูŠูŽุญู’ู„ููู’ ุฅูู„ู‘ูŽุง ุจูุงู„ู„ู‘ูŽู‡ูุŒ ููŽูƒูŽุงู†ูŽุชู’ ู‚ูุฑูŽูŠู’ุดูŒ ุชูŽุญู’ู„ููู ุจูุขุจูŽุงุฆูู‡ูŽุงุŒ ููŽู‚ูŽุงู„ูŽ: ู„ุงูŽ ุชูŽุญู’ู„ููููˆุง ุจูุขุจูŽุงุฆููƒูู…ู’)) โ€œWhoever swears, let him not swear by anything other than Allฤh.โ€ Ibn 'Umar radhiyallฤhu 'anhu said: Quraish used to swear by their forefathers, so he ๏ทบ said: โ€œDo not swear by your forefathers.โ€ ๐Ÿ“• [Reported by Bukhฤri (3836) and Muslim (1646)] In another wording, he ๏ทบ said: ((ู…ูŽู†ู’ ูƒูŽุงู†ูŽ ุญูŽุงู„ููู‹ุงุŒ ููŽู„ู’ูŠูŽุญู’ู„ููู’ ุจูุงู„ู„ู‘ูŽู‡ู ุฃูŽูˆู’ ู„ููŠูŽุตู’ู…ูุชู’)) โ€œIf anyone swears, then let him swear by Allฤh, or remain silent.โ€ ๐Ÿ“• [Reported by Bukhฤri (2679) and Muslim (1646)] Ibnul Qayyim raแธฅimahullฤh said: โ€œAmong the major sins is to swear by other than Allฤh, as the Messenger of Allฤh ๏ทบ said: โ€œHe who swears by other than Allฤh has committed shirk.โ€ [graded 'แธคasan' by Sheikh Albฤni in 'Irwฤ'ul Ghalฤซl (8/189)]...so it is on a level worse than major sins.โ€ ๐Ÿ“• [i'lฤmul Muwaqqi'ฤซn (6/571 - 572) From this speech of Ibnul Qayyim, we understand that swearing by other than Allฤh is an act of minor shirk, however it may become major shirk - taking one out of the fold of Islฤm - if a person venerates the one who is sworn by with a veneration equal to that of Allฤh. Sheikh 'Uthaymฤซn raแธฅimahullฤh said: โ€ูˆุงู„ุญู„ู ุจุบูŠุฑ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุดุฑูƒ ุฃูƒุจุฑุ› ุฅู† ุงุนุชู‚ุฏ ุฃู† ุงู„ู…ุญู„ูˆู ุจู‡ ู…ุณุงูˆ ู„ู„ู‡ ุชุนุงู„ู‰ ููŠ ุงู„ุชุนุธูŠู… ูˆุงู„ุนุธู…ุฉุŒ ูˆุฅู„ุง ุ› ูู‡ูˆ ุดุฑูƒ ุฃุตุบุฑ.โ€œ โ€œSwearing by other than Allฤh is an act major shirk, if one believes that the one who is sworn by is equal to Allฤh the Almighty in veneration and Might, otherwise; it is an act of minor shirk.โ€ ๐Ÿ“• [Al-Qawlul Mufeed (2 / 214)]
