BENEFIT 43: WHAT HAPPENS TO MY WEALTH AFTER MY DEATH? Once a person dies, their wealth goes towards fulfilling the following five rights - in the order mentioned below: 1. (تَ) تَجْهِيزُ الْمَيِّتِ Preparing the body; this includes covering the costs for washing the body, shrouds, digging the grave and in some cases, buying the land on which the grave sits. 2. (دُ) دَيْنٌ متعلقة بعين التركة 3. (") دَيْنٌ متعلقة بالتركة Paying off debts; the difference between 2 & 3 is that number 2 relates to debts connected to the actual wealth (eg. pawned jewellery), whereas 3 is more general; it includes debts owned to others or rights owed to Allāh, such as unfulfilled vows, fasts, hajj & 'Umrah, etc. 4. (و) وَصِيَّةٌ Carrying out the Will; the Will must not exceed 1/3 and it must not include any inheritor (except with the approval of the remaining inheritors). 5. (مُ) مِيرَاثٌ Inheritance; once the previous 4 steps have been fulfilled, the remaining wealth is shared out between the inheritors according to the Islamic laws of inheritance.
