BENEFIT 41: WHICH PRAYER HAS 2 ADHĀNS? The only prayer with 2 Adhāns is Ṣalātul Fajr❗️ Ibn 'Umar radhiyallāhu 'anhu reported that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) had two Mu'adhdhins: Bilāl and Ibn Umm Maktūm (May Allāh be pleased with them both). He said, The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: ((إِنَّ بِلاَلاً يُؤَذِّنُ بِلَيْلٍ فَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يُؤَذِّنَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ)) "Bilāl calls the Adhān during the night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktūm pronounces Adhān." [Transmitted by Bukhāri and Muslim]. What's the wisdom behind these 2 Adhāns? 'Abdullāh ibn Mas'ūd narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ((لَا يَمْنَعَنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ ـ أَوْ أَحَدًا مِنْكُمْ ـ أَذَانُ بِلاَلٍ مِنْ سَحُورِهِ، فَإِنَّهُ يُؤَذِّنُ ـ أَوْ يُنَادِي ـ بِلَيْلٍ، لِيَرْجِعَ قَائِمَكُمْ وَلِيُنَبِّهَ نَائِمَكُمْ، وَلَيْسَ أَنْ يَقُولَ الْفَجْرُ أَوِ الصُّبْحُ)) "The Adhān pronounced by Bilāl should not stop you from eating Suḥūr (pre-dawn meal), for he pronounces the Adhān at night, so that the one offering the late night prayer (Tahajjud) from among you might hurry up and the sleeping from among you might wake up. It does not mean that dawn or morning has started." [Transmitted by Bukhāri & Muslim] As for Salatul Jumu'ah, then it only has one Adhān, because -what's more correct is that- the 1st Adhān of Jumu'ah is an innovation❗️ Narrated As-Saa'ib ibn Yazeed: "كَانَ النِّدَاءُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَوَّلُهُ إِذَا جَلَسَ الْإِمَامُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَكَثُرَ النَّاسُ زَادَ النِّدَاءَ الثَّالِثَ عَلَى الزَّوْرَاءِ". “During the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, Abū Bakr and 'Umar, the Adhān for the Jumu'ah prayer used to be announced when the Imām sat on the pulpit. But during the Caliphate of 'Uthman when the Muslims increased in number, a third Adhān at Az-Zaura' was added. ” Abū 'Abdullah said, "Az-Zaura' is a place in the market of Medina." [Bukhari (912)] *NOTE: 'Three Adhans', because the first Adhān refers to the Adhān added by 'Uthmān radhiyallāhu 'anhu, the second is the call to the prayer; which is when the khaṭīb ascends the pulpit, and the third refers to the Iqāmah; as the Iqāmah is sometimes referred to as Adhān. In his book, “Al-Umm” (1/172 - 173), Imām Ash-Shāfi'ī wrote: (وأحب أن يكون الأذان يوم الجمعة حين يدخل الإمام المسجد ويجلس على المنبر فإذا فعل أخذ المؤذن في الأذان فإذا فرغ قام فخطب لا يزيد عليه). “I like that the Adhān on Jumu'ah is announced when the imam enters the masjid and sits on the pulpit. Once he does so, the mu'adhin calls the Adhān. When he finishes, the khateeb stands up and delivers his khutba. Nothing more.” He then quoted the aforementioned ḥadith of As-Saa’ib. Who said that this additional Adhān is an innovation? Wakī' raḥimahullāh related in his book, as mentioned by Ibn Rajab in Al-Fat-ḥ [(5/452) ibn Jawzi print], from Hishām Ibnul Ghāz, who said: 'I asked Naafi' concerning the first Adhān of Jumu'ah, so he said: ibn 'Umar said: ((بدعة، وكل بدعة ضلالة، وإن رآه الناس حسنا)). “(It is) an innovation, and every innovation is a misguidance, even if the people see it to be good.” Sheikh Yūsuf Al-Jazā'iri said: “This chain is 'Ṣaḥīḥ'. The men in the chain are all Thiqah (reliable)...' This Athar of Ibn 'Umar was also authenticated by: - Sheikh Muqbil raḥimahullāh - Sheikh Albani raḥimahullāh - Sheikh Muhammad Ali Al-Ithyobi raḥimahullāh - Sheikh Abdulmuhsin Al-Abbad ḥafidhahullāh - Sheikh Yahya Al-Hajuri ḥafidhahullāh (See: Bayanul Ghalaṭ by Sheikh Yūsuf Al-Jazā'iri) Did 'Ali radhiyallāhu anhu (the Khalifah after 'Uthman) continue with this additional Adhan during his Caliphate? In his tafsīr, Al-Qurtubi mentioned that during Ali's Khilāfah: (كان يُؤذن له أذانا واحدا بالكوفة). “Only one Adhān would be announced in Kūfa.” *NOTE: Kūfa was the centre of Khilafah at the time.
