BENEFIT 40: A WEEKLY MISTAKE THAT TAKES PLACE IN MY LOCAL ḤANAFI/TABLĪGHI MASJID
Sheikh 'Uthaymīn raḥimahullāh was asked the following question:
DOES JUMU'AH PRAYER HAVE ANY VOLUNTARY PRAYERS PRIOR TO IT❓
He, may Allāh have mercy on him, responded:
“Jumu'ah prayer does not have any Sunnah before it, thus what some people do in terms of praying after the first Adhān is called, this has no basis for it. Because the Prophet ﷺ used to pray two units of prayer in his house AFTER the Friday prayer, or four; the four units are proven from the words of the Messenger ﷺ (a) and the two units are proven from his action (b).

(a) Ibn 'Umar radhiyallāhu 'anhu said:
(كَانَ لاَ يُصَلِّى بَعْدَ الْجُمُعَةِ حَتَّى يَنْصَرِفَ، فَيُصَلِّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ)
“He wouldn't pray after Jumu'ah until he departed (from the masjid), then he would offer 2 units (at home).”
[Reported by Bukhāri (937) & Muslim (882)]
(b) on the authority of Abū Hurairah, that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:
(إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ الْجُمُعَةَ فَلْيُصَلِّ بَعْدَهَا أَرْبَعًا)
“If one of you prays Jumu'ah, then let him pray 4 (units) after it.”

The above 2 evidences seem contradictory; the first hadith says he ﷺ would pray 2 after Jumu'ah, and in the second, he ﷺ instructs us to pray 4, so how do we combine between the two❓
Imām Aḥmad said, both are optional:
(إن شاء صلى بعد الجمعة ركعتين، وإن شاء صلى أربعا)
“If he wishes, he can pray 2, and if he wishes he can pray 4.”
[Al-Mughni (2/109)]
But if a person prays in the masjid, it's better to pray 4 units, and if he prays at home, he should pray 2 units; as Ibnul Qayyim relayed from Sheikhul Islām raḥimahullāh in Zaadul Ma'aad (1/417).
He then added:
(وعلى هذا تدل الأحاديث ، وقد ذكر أبو داود عن ابن عمر أنه كان إذا صلى في المسجد صلى أربعا ، وإذا صلى في بيته صلى ركعتين).
“This is what the evidences indicate. In fact, Abu Dawud relayed from Ibn Umar that he used to pray 4 units - if he prayed in the masjid, and if he prayed at home, he would pray 2 units.”
