BENEFIT 37: HOW MANY PROPHETS ARE MENTIONED IN THE QURʿĀN? Sheikh Muḥammad Khalīl Al-Harrās raḥimahullāh wrote: “We must have specific belief in those (Prophets & Messengers) Who Allāh has named in the Qurʿān; and they are 25 (in number), mentioned in the poet's saying: فِي {تِلْكَ حُجَّتُنَا} مِنْهُمْ ثَمَانِيَةٌ * مِنْ بَعْدِ عَشْرٍ وَيَبْقَى سَبْعَةٌ وَهُمُ إِدْرِيسُ هُودٌ شُعَيبٌ صَالِحٌ وَكَذَا * ذُو الْكِفْلِ آدَمُ بِالْمُخْتَارِ قَدْ خُتِمُوا [Rough translation:] In (the Āyāt starting from) وتلك حجتنا, eighteen of them are mentioned(*); that leaves 7, and they are: Idrees, Hood, Shu'aib, Ṣaaliḥ, Dhul Kifl(*), Ādam, and the chosen one (i.e. Our prophet Muhammad ﷺ).” Source: [Explanation of Al-'Aqīdah Al-Wā siṭiyyah] _____ (*) the 18 are as follows: [Surah Al-An'am 83 - 86] (*) our teacher, Abū Zur'ah Aṣ-Ṣomālī ḥafidhahullāh explained during the Wāsiṭiyyah classes that, the scholars differed concerning Dhul Kifl; some said he was not a Prophet, but a righteous man; others said that he was a Prophet; and this was the opinion chosen by ibn Kathīr, based on the fact that he is mentioned alongside the Prophets in the Qurʿān - [see Sūrah Al-Anbiyā' (85) & Sūrah Ṣād (48)].
