BENEFIT 21: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN خَاطِئٌ AND مُخْطِئٌ? Both are nouns denoting the doer/subject (اِسْمُ فَاعِل) for their respective verbs; (خَاطِئٌ) is the اِسْمُ الفَاعِل from the 3 lettered verb خَطِئَ, and مُخْطِئٌ is the اِسْمُ فَاعِل from the 4 lettered verb أخْطَأَ. خَطِئَ - يَخْطَأُ ---> (ismul fā'il) خَاطِئٌ أَخْطَأ - يُخْطِئُ ---> (ismul fā'il) مُخْطِئٌ Both words relate to committing a mistake (خَطَأ), but there's a major difference between the two❗️ Reflect over the following Āyāt and see if you can spot the difference: 1. (رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذۡنَاۤ إِن نَّسِینَاۤ أَوۡ أَخۡطَأۡنَا) "Our Lord! Do not take us to account if we forget or make a mistake." [Sūrah Al-Baqarah 286] 2. (وَلَیۡسَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ جُنَاحࣱ فِیمَاۤ أَخۡطَأۡتُم بِهِۦ وَلَـٰكِن مَّا تَعَمَّدَتۡ قُلُوبُكُمۡ) "There is no blame on you for what you do by mistake, but ˹only˺ for what you do intentionally." [Sūrah Al-Aḥzāb 5] 3. (ٱسۡتَغۡفِرِی لِذَنۢبِكِۖ إِنَّكِ كُنتِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَاطِـِٔین) "Seek forgiveness for your sin." [Sūrah Yūsuf 29] 4. (إِنَّ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَهَـٰمَـٰنَ وَجُنُودَهُمَا كَانُوا۟ خَـٰطِـِٔینَ) "Surely Fir'awn, Hamān, and their soldiers were sinful." [Sūrah Al-Qaṣaṣ 8] Before you cross the line ⤵️, I urge you try and work out the difference for yourself... _________ The difference between the two nouns: أَخْطَأ - يُخْطِئُ ---> مُخْطِئٌ relates to committing a mistake UNINTENTIONALLY (see Āyahs 1 & 2; you will notice the English translation referring to it as a 'mistake') Whereas, خَطِئَ - يَخْطَأُ ---> خَاطِئٌ relates to committing a mistake INTENTIONALLY (see Āyahs 3 & 4; you will notice the English translation referring to it as a 'sin') __ NOTE: This benefit was taken from Sheikh Abū Bilāl's reading on, 'دفع إيهام الاضطراب عن آيات الكتاب' By Muḥammad Al-Amīn Ash-Shinqīṭī
