BENEFIT 19: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KHAWF & ḤUZN?
In today's tafsīr class, while explaining the following Āyah:
(وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ أُمِّ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَرۡضِعِیهِۖ فَإِذَا خِفۡتِ عَلَیۡهِ فَأَلۡقِیهِ فِی ٱلۡیَمِّ وَلَا تَخَافِی وَلَا تَحۡزَنِیۤۖ إِنَّا رَاۤدُّوهُ إِلَیۡكِ وَجَاعِلُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ)
"We inspired Mūsa's mother, saying, ‘Suckle him, and then, when you fear for his safety, put him in the river: do not be afraid, and do not grieve, for We shall return him to you and make him a messenger.’
[Sūrah Al-Qaṣaṣ 7]
Sheikh Abū Bilāl ḥafidhahullāh mentioned:
"Allāh instructed her not to have any خَوْف (fear) or حُزْن (grief).
And the difference between the two is that:
khawf (fear) relates to a matter that is anticipated to occur in the future, whereas ḥuzn (grief) is a result of something that has already taken place."
