BENEFIT 16: TRANSITIVITY IN RELATION TO ALLĀH'S NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES Knowing the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs will aid you understand the following: Sheikh 'Uthaymīn raḥimahullāh mentioned in his book [Al-Qawā'id Al-Muthlā], under the third principle related to Allāh's names (paraphrasing): If the Name refers to a transitive Attribute, then it includes three matters: [1] A Name of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic [2] An Attribute that is included in the meaning of the Name [3] And an external effect and implication. An example of this is the name As-Samī' (the All-Hearing). From this we understand that: (1) this is one of Allāh's names (2) it entails that Allāh possesses the Attribute of Hearing. (3) it includes a related external effect/implication - that He hears everything. But if the Name refers to a non-transitive Attribute, then it only includes two matters; [1] a Name of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic [2] and an Attribute that is included in the meaning of the Name. It does not however include the third matter mentioned above because we do not see a related effect or implication from this (as opposed to a transitive Attribute). An example of this is Al-Ḥayy (the Ever-Living). This name includes: (1) The Name Al-Ḥayy for Allāh, the Exalted, (2) And the Attribute of Life.
