BENEFIT 15: TRANSITIVITY OF VERBS
A verb (fi'l) in the Arabic language -in terms of transitivity- is divided into 2 categories:
1. Lāzim (intransitive)
&
2. Muta'addi (transitive)
▫️Lāzim verbs are ones which do not go beyond the doer (fā'il). In other words, they do not require an object (maf'ūl).
Eg. خرج زَيدٌ
Muḥammad exited.
▫️Muta'addi verbs on the other hand are ones which go beyond the doer, so they require an object.
Eg. محمدٌ قتل حوثيًّا
Muḥammad killed a Huthi.
▪️One way to distinguish between the two is to attach a pronoun to the end of the verb; if the verb makes sense with the attached pronoun, then it is muta'addi, otherwise it is lāzim.
Eg. Can we say: ُخَرَجَه
He exited him?
No. So the verb 'kharaja' is lāzim
Can we say: ُقَتَلَه
He killed him?
Yes. So the verb 'qatala' is muta'addi
