BENEFIT 5: A GOOD QUESTION TO TEST SOMEONE'S PROGRESS IN NAHU (ARABIC GRAMMAR) Question: Is it ever correct to say: حضر محمد وأحمد وزيد (with tanween on the three nouns), and why? The 3 most common answers are: 1. No; because nouns always end with tanween unless they have ال prefixed or are made مضاف. 2. No; because أحمد does not take tanween - since it's ممنوع من الصىرف (tanween is removed from every proper noun on the scale of a verb). 3. Yes; there are 2 exceptional cases where a ممنوع من الصرف noun is allowed to take tanween. The first case is in poetry; poets sometimes resort to this in order to maintain the poetic pattern. This is known as: ضرورة الشعر The second case occurs in normal speech; if a speaker mentions a ممنوع من الصىرف noun in the same context as words with tanween, he is allowed to give tanween to make the words all follow a similar pattern. This is known as: المناسبة For example, حضر محمد وأحمد وزيد (all ending with tanween) ______ How is this a test of a person's progress in Nahu? If a person responds with the 1st answer, this would suggest he has yet to complete Madina book 1. If he responds with the 2nd answer, this would suggest that he has completed Madina Book 1 and may have even studied Ajrumiyyah. If he responds with the 3rd answer, this indicated that he has studied Al-Mutammimah (the book usually studied after Ajrumiyyah). Or... He studied all the aforementioned books, BUT his Muraja'ah is ta'baan! ______ EXTRA BENEFIT: An example of this from the Qur'an is the Qira'ah of Naafi': (سلاسلا وأغلالا وسعيرا) (With tanween on all three) As well as: (قواريرا)
