Honourable Sheikh, if we say that the scholars who endorsed Ihya At-Turath were unaware of its true condition, does this resemble the Hizbees’ accusation that our scholars lack insight into contemporary issues?
Sheikh Yahya ḥafidhahullāh responds:
No, this is not correct. Among the scholars, some are well-informed of certain matters, while others may not be. Consider the case of ’Umar ibn Al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allāh be pleased with him, who was about to stone a woman with mental illness who had committed adultery. ’Ali, may Allāh be pleased with him, reminded him, "O Commander of the believers, do you not remember the Prophet's words: 'The pen is lifted from three…,' including the insane person until they regain their sanity?" ’Umar replied, "Yes." Ali reminded him about the insane woman, so ’Umar released her. There are other similar examples, as certain knowledge may be hidden from one person while clear to another, for "Above every possessor of knowledge, there is one more knowing." [Quran, 12:76]. Allāh bestows His favour on whom He wills, for "the bounty of your Lord is not limited." [Quran, 17:20]. Allāh may give insight to one person that is not given to another, as "He is the Opener, the All-Knowing." [Quran, 34:26]
In any case, those who have condemned Ihya At-Turath and clarified their deviation did so based on evidence, pointing to its hindrance of the Da'wah and its incitement of discord. They condemned it with facts that must not be dismissed. Moreover, those who refrained from condemning the organisation did not criticise those who had rightfully done so—take note of their wara' (piety)! Reflect on the current state of affairs and on the stance of our scholars. Our late Sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him, spoke against Ihya At-Turath, pointing out its deviation, as did other scholars. Meanwhile, others have praised it, but they refrained from criticising those who spoke against it based on their knowledge. They simply said, “We know only good of it,” according to their knowledge.
In contrast, in this day and age, if one criticises a person or a wrongdoing, and another disagrees, it results in an outcry, disruptions, and various other reactions—may Allāh rectify the situation.
Furthermore, a confirmed report takes precedence over a denial, especially when the one confirming has additional knowledge supporting their claim. Whoever has knowledge of a matter is a proof over the one who lacks that knowledge. These are established knowledge-based principles, agreed upon by the majority of scholars, to the extent that they say if one scholar, through evidence, affirms something, his view may be given priority over that of a hundred others.
