"9. The publicising and manifesting the seeking mercy for Ubaid Al-Jaabiri; who is a person of Innovation and a staunch Hizbi isn't correct, in such a public setting for no apparent reason which makes it a must. Is not correct and it is to be avoided." [End Quote]
RESPONSE:
Ruling on seeking Mercy for the People of Innovation (1)
Question: Is it prohibited to seek mercy upon the people of innovation, whether in the context of refutation or outside of it?
Sheikh Yahya answers: Among the people of innovation, there are those for whom it is absolutely forbidden to pray for mercy, and they are the ones whose innovations amount to disbelief. Allah the Exalted says (interpreted meaning): “And never offer a prayer for any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and died while they were defiantly disobedient” [At-Tawbah: 84]. Allah forbade His Prophet from praying for them, and that prayer is essentially a supplication. As narrated in an authentic hadith, “The Prophet ﷺ sought permission from his Lord to ask for forgiveness for his mother, but Allah did not permit him. He then sought permission to visit her grave, and Allah granted him permission.” (2)
As for those whose innovations fall short of disbelief, it is permissible to seek for mercy upon them after their death, based on the general meaning of Allah's statement (interpreted meaning): “And ask forgiveness for your sins and for the believing men and believing women.” [Muhammad: 19].

Sheikh Muḥammad Ba Jammāl ḥafidhahullāh states:
"Sometimes, as a means of being gentle with certain people when inviting them and explaining the truth, one might say, for example, 'So-and-so died upon an innovation.' He has gone on to face the consequences of his deeds,' or similar expressions. 'The individual may have been striving for the truth or may have intended good.' But we must still take a clear stance regarding these innovations."
