«إذا أجمعوا على الشيء؛ فلا يُرتابُ في كونه حجة، فإن اختلفوا؛ فلا يكون قول بعضهم حجة على بعض، ولا على من بعدهم، ويُرْجَعُ في ذلك إلى لغة القرآن أو السنة، أو عموم لغة العرب، أو أقوال الصحابة في ذلك» "If they are unanimously agreed on a matter, there is no doubt that it serves as proof. If they differ, the view of some cannot be used as proof against others against later generations. In such cases, reference should be made to the language of the Qur'ān or Sunnah, or the general language of the Arabs, or the views of the Companions." [Majmū’ Al-Fatāwā (13/370)] He also said, may Allāh have mercy upon him: «من عدل عن مذاهب الصحابة والتابعين وتفسيرهم إلى ما يخالف ذلك: كان مخطئاً في ذلك، بل مبتدعاً وإن كان مجتهداً مغفوراً له خطؤه» "Whoever deviates from the views and interpretations of the Companions and the Tabi'un and follows something contrary to them is in error, and even if they are engaging in ijtihad, they are considered innovators. However, they are forgiven for their error." [Majmū’ Al-Fatāwā (13/361)]
