BENEFIT 237: Motives for enjoining good and forbidding evil

Ibn Rajab raḥimahullāh said: «واعلم أن الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر تارة يحمل عليه رجاء ثوابه، وتارة خوف العقاب في تركه، وتارة الغضب لله على انتهاك محارمه، وتارة النصيحة للمؤمنين والرحمة لهم ورجاء إنقاذهم مما أوقعوا أنفسهم فيه من التعرض لغضب الله وعقوبته في الدنيا والآخرة، وتارة يحمل عليه إجلال الله وإعظامه ومحبته، وأنه أهل أن يُطاع فلا يُعصَى ويُذكَّر فلا ينسى ويُشكَر فلا يُكفَر». "Know that enjoining good and forbidding evil may sometimes be motivated by: 1⃣. Hope of its reward 2⃣. Fear of punishment for neglecting it 3⃣. Anger for the sake of Allah over the violation of His sacred limits. 4⃣. Desire to advise and show mercy to believers, hoping to save them from what they have brought upon themselves, which may expose them to Allāh's wrath and punishment in this world and the Hereafter. 5⃣. Reverence and exaltation of Allāh, love for Him, and the recognition that He is deserving of obedience and not disobedience, remembrance and not forgetfulness, and gratitude and not ingratitude."
