BENEFIT 235: The beginner has to seek knowledge before jumping into the books of Jarh wa ta'deel

Sheikh Fawzan ḥafidhahullāh said «أنا ما أجيز لطالب العلم المبتدئ أنه يدخل في الجرح والتعديل ومطالعة كتاب الجرح والتعديل، أوصيه أن يتعلم أولاً مصطلح الحديث، ويأخذ هذا العلم عن أهله، ثم بعد ذلك يطلع على كتب الجرح والتعديل؛ لأنه صار عنده أهلية للاطلاع، أما أنه يقول الإنسان ما عنده أهلية ولم يدرس وإنما غاية ما هو أنه يأخذ كتب الجرح والتعديل ويقرأ فيها ويقول فلان كذا وفلان كذا، هذا خطر وهو هذا من النوع الذي ذكرناه لكم التعالم وهو الاعتماد على الكتب بدون تأصيل». "I do not permit a beginner student of knowledge to engage in the study of Jarh wa Ta'dil or to delve into the books on this subject. I advise them first to study the science of Mustalah hadith and to acquire this knowledge from qualified scholars. Only after that should they explore the books on Jarh wa Ta'dil, as they will then have the necessary competence to do so. However, if a person lacks this competence, has not studied, and merely picks up books on Jarh wa Ta'dil, reading them and passing judgments on narrators, this is dangerous.
