BENEFIT: 230: The 72 misguided Sects from this Ummah

Narrated Mu'awiyah raḍhiyallāhu 'anhu: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ((ألا إن من قبلكم من أهل الكتاب افترقوا على ثنتين وسبعين ملة ، وإن هذه الملة ستفترق على ثلاث وسبعين : ثنتان وسبعون في النار وواحدة في الجنة ، وهي الجماعة)). "Indeed, those before you from the People of the Book divided into seventy-two sects, and this Ummah will divide into seventy-three: seventy-two will be in the Fire, and one will be in Paradise, and it is the Jama'ah (those who adhere to the way of the Salaf)." [Reported by Abu Dawud (4597), authenticated by Sheikh Albani in As-Silsilah As-sahihah (204)] These 72 misguided sects were not specifically identified by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. However, some scholars have exerted their efforts to determine their origins and identify them, each speaking according to their own ijtihād. One of these scholars was Abu Al-Faraj Ibn Al-Jawzi rahimahullah, who wrote in 'Talbees Iblees': "If it is asked, are these sects known?" The answer is: We are aware of the divisions and the origins of the sects, and that each group among them has split into further sects, even if we do not fully comprehend all the names of those sects and their doctrines.
