Question: Is the default condition of a Muslim adherence to the Sunnah or innovation? May Allah reward you with goodness.
Sheikh Yahya Al-Hajuri ḥafidhahullāh:
It cannot be said that all Muslims are adherents of the Sunnah, nor can it be said that all Muslims are adherents of innovation. Each individual must be assessed according to their own condition, and judgments should be made based on their current state. Among Muslims, are some who follow the Sunnah, others are Sufis, some are Shia, some belong to political groups, and some hold Murji'ah beliefs. To label all these groups as adherents of the Sunnah is a grave error. Supporting this position is the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: "The Jews split into seventy-one sects, and the Christians split into seventy-two sects, and this Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of which will be in the Fire except one." This indicates that within this Ummah, which is the nation of response and reward, there are those who deviate from the saved group and from the truth and the Sunnah. [Al-Kanz Ath-Thameen]
