BENEFIT 15: Is Salafiyyah the Aṣl (default state) of a Muslim?

No, it is INCORRECT to affirm Salafiyyah as the default state of a Muslim. If a person is Muslim, we affirm for them Islām and As-Salāmah (a state of innocence & blamelessness), but we do not automatically affirm Salafiyyah for them until they adhere to Salafiyyah; because 'Salafiyyah' is a praiseworthy description that is additional to Islām. Imām Al-Barbahāri raḥimahullāh said: “It is not permissible for a Muslim to say, 'so-and-so is a person of Sunnah' until he knows from him that he has combined the Khiṣāl (fundamental Principles) of the Sunnah. It is not permissible to say about him 'a person of Sunnah' until he combines all of the [fundamental principles of the] Sunnah.” [https://t.me/youssefalgazairi/244] Likewise, Sheikhul Islām ibn Taymiyyah raḥimahullāh said: وَأَمَّا قَوْلُ مَنْ يَقُولُ : الْأَصْلُ فِي الْمُسْلِمِينَ الْعَدَالَةُ فَهُوَ بَاطِلٌ ، بَلْ الْأَصْلُ فِي بَنِي آدَمَ الظُّلْمُ وَالْجَهْلُ كَمَا قَالَ تَعَالَى : {وَحَمَلَهَا الْإِنْسَانُ إنَّهُ كَانَ ظَلُومًا جَهُولًا } ، وَمُجَرَّدُ التَّكَلُّمِ بِالشَّهَادَتَيْنِ لَا يُوجِبُ انْتِقَالَ الْإِنْسَانِ عَنْ الظُّلْمِ وَالْجَهْلِ إلَى الْعَدْلِ. “As for the saying of those who say: The origin in Muslims is justice, then this is false, rather the origin in the humankind is transgression and ignorance, as He the Exalted said (in what is translated to mean): {But mankind bore it. Verily, he is transgressive and ignorant}. And mere utterance of the two testimonies (Shahādah) does not remove a person from the state of transgression and ignorance into a state of justice.” [Majmū’ Al-Fatāwā (15/357)] Similarly, we do not affirm Salafiyyah for anyone by mere utterance of the Shahādah. Sheikh ’Abdul-Azīz Ar-Rājiḥī ḥafidhahullāh commented on the above statement saying: كلام شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية هو الصواب، قد استدل له، استدل عليه بالأدلة ودعَّمه، والدعوى إذا أقيم عليها دليل واضحٍ قُبلت. “The speech of Sheikhul Islām Ibn Taymiyyah is what is correct. He inferred and supported that based on evidence, and if a claim is backed and proven by clear evidence, it is to be accepted.” Similarly, Sheikh Rabī’ ibn Hādi Al-Madkhali waffaqahullah said: " كيف الأصل فى الناس السنة وعندنا روافض وعندنا باطنية وعندنا الشيوعيين وعندنا حزبيين وعندنا من كل الأصناف!! كيف الأصل فيهم السنة!! [من قال] هذا الكلام!! وابن تيمية- رحمه الله- يردُّ على من يقول: " الأصل فى المسلم العدالة", يقول: هذا كلام باطل, لأن الله تعالى قال فى الانسان: إنه كان ظلوماً جهولاً. فالأصل فيه الظلم والجهل و .. يعنى دخوله فى الاسلام لا يعطيه مرتبة العدالة. أو كما قال. فكيف الأصل فى الناس السنة فى بلدان اختلط فيها الحابل بالنابل وصار أكثر الناس على غير السنة .. فإن عرفت هذا من مدرسة معينة سلفية فيكون فيه احسان الظن .. نحسن به الظن ..أما والدنيا اختلط فيها الحابل بالنابل وأنت لا تدرى هذا من هذا فاعرف صاحب الحق .. ولهذا كانوا يقولون (إن هذا العلم دين فانظروا عمن تأخذون دينكم). أما على رأى القائل الأصل فى الناس السنة فخذه من كل من هب ودب .. وقال ابن سيرين: إن الناس كانوا لا يسألون عن الاسناد فلما ظهرت الفتنة وكانت ليست فتنة [الأوضاع] الآن كانت أخف من هذه [...] قالوا سموا لنا رجالكم فإن كان من أهل السنة قبل حديثه وإن كان من أهل البدعة رد حديثه. “How can the 'Sunnah' be the origin of people when we have Rafidites, we have Bāṭiniyyah (esotericists), we have communists, we have Ḥizbīs, and we have all kinds!! How can the origin in them be the Sunnah?!! [Who said] this statement!!? Meanwhile, Ibn Taymiyyah raḥimahullāh refutes those who say: “The origin of a Muslim is justice/uprightness.” He says: This is a false statement, because Allāh Almighty said about mankind: {He is transgressive and ignorant}. Thus, the origin is transgression and ignorance ... meaning, his mere acceptance of Islām does not warrant him the rank of justice/uprightness. Or as he said. So how can the origin of people be the Sunnah in countries where the different sects are mixed together and where most people are not upon the Sunnah!?... If you know this [individual] is from a specific Salafi school, you have good assumption of him...We think well of him..
