Question: In public groups, some people have images on their profile icons. Should we remove them or be patient with them?
Sheikh Abul Yaman 'Adnan Al-Maṣqari ḥafidhahullāh responds:
"We advise our brothers who call to Allah through these social platforms, whether WhatsApp or Telegram, to focus on spreading good, the Sunnah, and Tawheed, and enjoining good and forbidding evil.
We advise that one should not spy on others’ pictures or numbers. It is not appropriate for everyone to keep checking these.
All channels are not free from this issue, and no one is burdened with removing them as they are hidden, as you know. Similarly, on WhatsApp, one should not delve into this.
Whoever joins the groups, may Allah grant them life. This indicates a desire for goodness and to hear good things. One should not spy on names; do not dispute over this, may Allah bless you.
Do not remove someone who has a picture of their child or father as their background image. Advise them and be patient with them. I have advised brothers on this matter, as many people find it difficult to understand this issue overnight. They join the group wanting to listen today, tomorrow, and the day after, and perhaps Allah will guide them. Patience is necessary with these individuals, especially since this issue has misled some followers due to the fatwas of certain scholars.
We should be patient with them and present evidence, hoping that the truth will prevail over falsehood and that they will return to the truth.
It is sufficient that they hear goodness and the call to Allah, the Exalted.
We hope that the groups will be free of images and any inappropriate content. But for the sake of calling to Allah, only goodness should be spread in these groups.
It is not permissible to share images, false matters, or content from innovators and hizbees. It is not permissible to share content from evil-doers, corrupt people, songs, or flirtatious poems.
Only goodness should be shared in these groups. This is the obligation. No images should be shared in the group. Anyone who shares images should be advised and cautioned; otherwise, they should be expelled from the group.
However, if someone has a picture as their background, be patient with them while advising them and providing evidence. Always share the hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ that prohibit images and photography and state that images drive angels away. May Allah help us, this is the priority.
This is part of wisdom in calling to Allah, the Exalted, and there is no contention in this.
The most important thing is that our brothers should not dispute. If someone wants to remove such a person from their group, we cannot force them otherwise. But for those who wish to call to Allah and show kindness to these individuals while repeatedly advising them, they are doing well.
If someone in the group has pictures of women, it is best to advise them privately. If they do not comply, they should be removed to avoid causing fitna (temptation) to others. Yes, may Allah bless you. Handle things according to their circumstances.
We live in a time where falsehood and calls to fitna have increased.
Therefore, we should be lenient with those who like to hear good things because most people do not understand. This is why they do not favor groups that promote goodness and the teachings of the Sunnah. Most people are ignorant and heedless.
Only those with some goodness in their hearts or those who are truly undercover agents join groups that follow the Sunnah. Despite this, the call of the people of the Sunnah is the same inwardly and outwardly. May Allah protect and bless you.
We ask Allah to unite your hearts in goodness, da'wah, and knowledge. May Allah protect you all."
