BENEFIT 183: Videorecording oneself in prayer or whilst engaging in acts of worship

Question: It has become common among some imams to film themselves during prayer, with some even showing their faces during the recording. What is your opinion on this practice? Sheikh Fawzan, may Allah preserve him, responds: This is Riyaa (showing off). It is Riyaa and is not permissible. Allah has mentioned the hypocrites in this way (interpreted meaning): "They show off to people, and do not remember Allah except a little." [Quran 4:142]. A Muslim should not be impressed with their own deeds; rather, they should always see themselves as falling short, regardless of their efforts. They should see themselves as deficient in fulfilling the rights of Allah, the Almighty, and should not commend themselves. Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, said (interpreted meaning): "So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him." [Quran 53:32].
