BENEFIT 182: Ijtihād that leads to innovation is inexcusable

Ibn Abi Zayd Al-Qayrawāni (D. 386 AH), may Allah have mercy on him, said:
«ومن قول أهل السنة إنه لا يعذر من أداه اجتهاده إلى بدعة لأن الخوارج اجتهدوا في التأويل فلم يعذروا إذا خرجوا بتأويلهم عن الصحابة فسماهم عليه السلام مارقين من الدين وجعل المجتهد في الأحكام مأجوراً وإن أخطأ».
"From the beliefs of Ahlus Sunnah is that one is not excused if they are led to innovation due to their own ijtihād. The Khawārij exercised ijtihād but were not excused when their interpretations led them to deviate from the Companions. The Prophet ﷺ referred to them as ones whose have exited from the religion, whereas he established that whoever exercises ijtihād in legal rulings is rewarded, even if he errs."
