Sheikh Al-Albani, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "...From this detailed discussion on this particular issue and its like arises a very important Fiqhi principle. Whoever understands it and grasps its implications will adhere to the Sunnah and avoid innovations. This principle states that the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ is divided into two categories: Sunnah Fi'liyyah and Sunnah Tarkiyyah. Be careful not to say 'Sunnah Turkiyyah' (Turkish Sunnah), it is merely Sunnah Tarkiyyah; the opposite of Fi'liyyah. Therefore, the Sunnah is of two types: Sunnah Fi'liyyah and Sunnah Tarkiyyah. The meaning of this is that whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed in terms of acts of worship and obedience (i.e. Sunnah Fi'liyyah), it is Sunnah for us to do the same. And whatever he ﷺ refrained from in terms of acts of worship and obedience (i.e. Sunnah Tarkiyyah), it is Sunnah for us to refrain from it as well, in following our Prophet ﷺ. Thus, [we have] Sunnah Fi'liyyah and Sunnah Tarkiyyah." _ Ruling on carrying out a Sunnah Tarkiyyah: Ibn Hajar Al-Haytami [Aḥmad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad - D. 973H.] rahimahullah said: «وَكَذَا مَا تَركه - ﷺ - مَعَ قيام الْمُقْتَضي: فَيكون تَركه سنة، وَفعله بِدعَة مذمومة». "Similarly, whatever the Prophet ﷺ deliberately left unaddressed despite the presence of that which necessitated action, then his leaving it is considered a Sunnah, and performing it is regarded as a reprehensible innovation."
