Questioner: We have a young Algerian named Shams Ad-Din who ascends the pulpit on Fridays and delivers an entire Friday sermon attacking Sheikh Yahya and refuting him. In his sermon, he claimed that a student of knowledge in Dammaj authored a treaties entitled "The Mistakes of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ," and this treatise was distributed in Dammaj and no one in Dammaj spoke against it. What is your opinion on this?
Sheikh Yūsuf Al-Jazaa’iri hafidahullāh responds:
"By Allāh, this is among the lies for which we ask Allah Almighty to cut the tongue of its perpetrator. This person, may Allāh bless you, is indeed a fitnah-monger. When was this treatise authored in Dammaj, collecting the mistakes of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ? I Seek refuge in Allah! If someone authors concerning the mistakes of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, then the least that can be said about his condition is that he is astray and leading others astray. I seek refuge in Allāh that anyone would say such a thing, and if Sheikh Yahya or anyone else were to say it, we would disassociate ourselves from him. This is outright falsehood. This is blatant lying. We lived in Dammaj for seven years and never saw anyone alleging such things, and to this day, this person cannot provide evidence for it, nor can anyone else. It is said to them, "Produce your evidence if you are truthful." Where is the evidence that the people of the Sunnah in Dammaj compiled the errors of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ? This alone undermines the credibility of this liar. Why? Because it's not just one lie; it contains several falsehoods. The first lie is that there are people who compiled the errors of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The second lie is that the people of the Sunnah in Dammaj accepted it, as their failure to object it implies their acceptance. The matter is crystal clear, and such statements nullify their credibility. It was incumbent upon people to safeguard their religion and say to him, "What is your evidence? Bring forth your proof! Where is this treatise? Where is this treatise that allegedly exposed the errors of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?" I seek refuge in Allah from such speech! And where is the evidence for your claims? If one cannot produce evidence, and there is no evidence, then let everyone, if they are just, say that he is a lying fabricator! Yes, indeed, and that's what he is."
