BENEFIT 128: Possessing/buying books of scholars which contain commentary or verification by misguided individuals

QUESTION: We have some books authored by the scholars and imams such as Sheikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Muhammad ibn Abdil Wahhab, may Allah have mercy on them all, which have been checked by people who have deviated from the Sunnah, and some books are expensive so we cannot afford to buy them, therefore, is it appropriate for us to utilise these books in our studies, bearing in mind that the explanations and commentary are provided by scholars adhering to the Sunnah, but the checking is by some individuals who have deviated?
ANSWER (Sheikh Yahya Al-Hajuri)
"If the book is authored by an Imam, then benefit from it. The books of scholars are not abandoned because so-and-so did the checking. Avoid their checking, and if Allah allows you to buy a checking written by a Salafi, that is good and more beneficial, because you may find useful, beneficial points and good references; because the Sunni takes the opportunity to caution and clarify [whatever he sees necessary]. He takes the opportunity to benefit [others] and is keen to spread knowledge, da'wah and benefit [others] according to his ability. If you do not find except the aforementioned ones, then benefit from that Imam (the original author) and disregard the commentary of that person of deviation. If anything, refer back to the original references and benefit from that. If we were to forsake the books of scholars due to such commentaries, it would be detrimental to the dissemination of knowledge. We would be deprived of [much] good do to the presence of such commentaries. We do not care about them nor their commentary. Comment on the book yourself, serve it yourself, and abandon that person who is not upright. This is it, may Allah bless you, until knowledge is gained from the books of knowledge. In the Sheikh's preface to my checking of "Islaah Al-Mujtama," may Allah have mercy on him, and in some prefaces, the Sheikh mentioned that we only bought the book "Al-Halal wal Haram" by al-Qaradawi for the commentary of Sheikh al-Albani. It was not for the sake of al-Qaradawi's book itself. Therefore, a person benefits from the knowledge of a Salafi Scholar. Perhaps they may buy a book like "Al-Halal wal Haram" that nobody wants purely for Sheikh al-Albani's commentary. So long as Sheikh Albani has had some input, let's look at his input, his corrections, and what he said. Till this date, we may find references to "Al-Halal wal Haram" by al-Qaradawi regarding correction or weakening of a hadith, and we say, "He (Sheikh Albani) weakened the hadith in that particular book." This is from benefiting from the knowledge of that scholar, not al-Qaradawi.
