All praise belong to Allāh, and may the Ṣalāt and Salām be upon the final Messenger of Allāh. To proceed:
Imām Ibn Al-'Arabi Al-Māliki raḥimahullāh stated: "If people cannot find any flaws in someone but are consumed by jealousy and hatred towards them, they will fabricate flaws." [Al-'Awāṣim min Al-Qawāsim (2/964)]
If someone maligns a fellow Muslim in our presence, it is incumbent upon us to defend them, counter the slander, and admonish and silence the speaker, particularly when it concerns a scholar among the scholars of Islām.
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:
((مَنْ رَدَّ عَنْ عِرْضِ أَخِيهِ رَدَّ اللَّهُ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ النَّارَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ))
“Whoever protects the honour of his brother in his absence, Allāh will protect his face from the Fire on the Day of Judgment.”
[Reported by Tirmithi (1931) from the hadith of Abu Ad-Dardā' radhiyallahu 'anhu, graded 'Sahih' by Sheikh Albani in Sahih At-Tirmithi]
And he ﷺ said:
“If anyone makes a false accusation against a Muslim, Allāh will make him dwell in the foul fluid of the inhabitants of Hell till he retracts his statement.”
[Reported by Abu Dawud (3597) from the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar radhiyallahu 'anhu; graded 'Sahih' by Sheikh Albani rahimahullah in Sahih Abi Dawud]
