Charity boxes / buckets

Some of the brothers from Thailand asked me about a practice in their country where, after Jumu'ah prayers, some masjids pass around a box between the worshippers, and they contribute money to it. Some give, while others do not, but it gets passed by all the worshippers. Is this action permissible?
I answer, with the help of Allāh, that this action is not permissible. Whoever wishes to give charity should do so discreetly without causing embarrassment. The origin of charity is that it should be discreet, and there is no need to publicise it. This practice is not something we are accustomed to or aware of except from the Hizbi individuals and innovators. The Prophet, peace be upon him, had a masjid, and there was no donation box therein. Likewise, the righteous predecessors did not have such practices. Any act of worship that was available to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and he did not do it, [doing it after him] is an innovation.
