BENEFIT 125: The least form of Punishment for seeking knowledge from innovators

The esteemed Sheikh Muhammad Amān Al-Jami - may Allah have mercy on him - stated: «وأقل ما يصاب به الطالب الذى يطلب العلم على أيدي المبتدعة؛ أن تخرج من قلبه كراهة البدع والمعاصى والمخالفات، ويفقد واجب الحب في الله والبغض في الله، ولا يبالي جالس سنياً أو مبتدعاً، وإنما الحكم عنده لما يظنهُ مصلحةً للدعوة، يدور معه حيث دار، والله المستعان، وذلك من علامات مرض القلب الذى يؤدى إلى نوع من النفاق عياذاً بالله» "The least that afflicts the student who seeks knowledge from innovators is that the hatred for innovation, sins, and deviations depart from his heart, and he loses the imperative of loving and hating for the sake of Allah. So he does not care whether he sits with a Sunni or an innovator. Rather, his judgment is based on what he deems beneficial for the Da'wah, adapting accordingly wherever he goes.
