It is reported on the authority of Qutailah raḍhiyallāhu ’anhu that a Jewish man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said to him: “Verily, you (Muslims) commit Shirk, for you say: 'As Allah Wills and as you will; and you say: By the Ka’bah!' And so the Prophet ﷺ ordered whoever wanted to swear, to say: “By the Lord of the Ka’bah!" and to say: “As Allāh Wills, then as you will.” [Reported by An-Nasā’ee who said that it is authentic]
Sheikh Fawzān ḥafiḍhahullāh mentioned in his commentary on Kitab At-Tawheed (Al-Mulakhaṣ):
“Benefits derived from this ḥadīth:
«٧. أن العالم إذا نهى عن شيء فإنه يبين البديل الذي يغني عنه إذا أمكن».
7. When a scholar forbids something, he should give a suitable alternative wherever possible.” [end quote]
It is already difficult for people to refrain from haraam which they have grown accustomed to, so as callers to Allah we should not make it any more difficult. Notice how the Prophet ﷺ gave them a lawful, yet easy alternative; instead of swearing by the ka'bah (which is shirk), he told them to swear by the Lord of the Ka’bah. And he told them that if they want to mention Allah's Will alongside the will of others, that they should simply use "then" (as Allah Wills, THEN as you will) as opposed to "and"; because the use of "then" does not imply parity between the Will of Allah and the will of others, in contrast to "and".
