BENEFIT: Why Did Some of the Salaf Rebel Against Al-Hajjaj?

2 July 2026 • 54 views
Sheikh Dagash Al-'Ajmi hafidhahullah says: One may ask: "Why did they (the Salaf) rebel against al-Hajjaj? Was their rebellion right or wrong? Al-Hajjaj was a Muslim, and you say that it is not permissible to rebel against a Muslim ruler, and that this is a consensus. So why did they rebel?" The answer is that: 1⃣ Some of those who rebelled believed that Al-Hajjaj was a disbeliever. They considered him a disbeliever, so they rebelled against him on that basis. 2⃣. As for those who rebelled while still believing that he was a Muslim, this was a fitnah that occurred before the relevant hadiths and reports had reached them. Those who had not received these hadiths and reports are not like those who had received them. Many hadiths were not collected or widely preserved until years after their time. 3⃣. A third point is that many of those who rebelled later repented and regretted what they had done because they witnessed the great turmoil and destruction that resulted. 4⃣. A fourth point is that a sensible person does not use the example of those who were destroyed instead of those who were spared. Should a reasonable person take as evidence a rebellion that brought widespread devastation, or an approach that resulted in security and stability? Source: https://t.me/almanhajussalafi/2403
