BENEFIT: Unprescribed Practices Diminish Love for Prescribed Practices

Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Iqtiḍāʾ aṣ-Ṣirāṭ al-Mustaqīm:
"When a person fulfills some of his needs through practices that are not prescribed by Islam, his desire for the prescribed acts decreases, and he benefits from them less, in proportion to how much he has replaced them with other things.
On the other hand, if he directs his eagerness and determination toward what is prescribed, his love for it grows, he benefits from it more, his religion becomes stronger, and his Islam becomes more complete.
That is why you often find that someone who frequently listens to poetry in order to soften or improve his heart gradually loses the desire to listen to the Qur'an. He may even come to dislike listening to it."
