How to Repent from Backbiting
Question:
A woman who has been granted success in following the Salafi manhaj asks: βAll praise is for Allah, but I feel great pain because I committed many sins of backbiting in the past. I used to speak badly about people, but now I want to repent. I have heard that one of the conditions of repentance is to seek forgiveness from the people involved. However, if I do that, it may cause problems and damage my reputation, especially since I teach some female students the Qurβan and Sunnah. So we ask your eminence to guide her regarding what she should do. May Allah reward you with good.β
Sheikh Shamsan Ar-Raymi hafidhahullah:
If the person who was backbitten knows about the backbiting, then it is necessary to go to them and ask for their pardon.
But if they do not know about it, then it is enough to seek Allahβs forgiveness for them, speak well of them, and mention their good qualities in the gatherings where they were backbitten. Indeed, good deeds erase bad deeds.
This is the correct detailed ruling, and it is the view chosen by Sheikh Al-ΚΏUthaymΔ«n in his explanation of RiyΔαΈ aas-αΉ’ΔliαΈ₯Δ«n.
