The Reality of Jama’at Tablīgh

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم The following is a brief clarification regarding some observations made against the aforementioned group. Description Jama’atu at-Tableegh is one of the largest Islamic movements and has become a predominant call to Islam in many parts of Asia. In fact, they are found in over 200 countries worldwide. However, unfortunately, it is a movement that has been devoid of correct Islamic teachings. The Founder Muhammad Ilyas, the founder of Jama’atu at-Tableegh, first introduced his spurious ideology around 1926. He was initially a teacher at a school in India. He later abandoned teaching to become a missionary. He claimed to have had a spiritual dream that led him to falsely interpret a verse as meaning that he should create a group devoted to commanding good and forbidding evil. This occurred after he pledged allegiance to the four spiritual paths of Sufism. At times, he would visit the graves of certain shaykhs and establish spiritual meditation there in order to seek blessings. He established his group to focus mainly on six concepts of Islam: Attestation of faith Salāh Knowledge with dhikr Honouring the Muslims Sincerity of intention Going out for da‘wah For this reason, Jama’atu at-Tableegh revolves its da‘wah primarily around these six concepts, in accordance with innovated methods extracted from some of the Sufi schools of India. Currently, Muhammad Ilyas’s grave is located in his masjid in India, where there is a designated window for those who wish to invoke him and seek Allah’s aid. Some Common Traits of Jama’atu at-Tableegh Forming circles of two or more people inside the masjid to study the last ten surahs of the Qur’an, and whenever they go out on a mission, they are required to perform the aforementioned task. Continuous observance of i‘tikāf on Thursdays. Designating specific periods for going out for da‘wah: three days every month, forty days every year, and four months once in a lifetime. Continuous collective supplication after each da‘wah trip. Conducting two jawlahs (walk-arounds) every week: one in the masjid and the other outdoors. Giving little importance to Tawheed al-Uloohiyyah and Tawheed al-Asmaa’ wa as-Sifaat. Their speeches mainly revolve around Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah. Believing that no one can succeed in giving da‘wah except through their methodology. Appointing an ameer (leader) among themselves even when they are not travelling. Pledging allegiance to their methodology by chanting the word “مستعدون” (“ready”). Giving little attention to teaching people matters of jurisprudence. Harbouring hostility and hatred toward Ahl as-Sunnah. Being fully welcomed by countries that wage war against Islam. Maintaining financial operations within the organization that remain unclear to this day. Showing no concern whatsoever for religious politics. Adhering to a common sermon that they begin their talks with after the five daily prayers. Basing their da‘wah on storytelling, even if the stories are unauthentic or fabricated. Making unsolicited and inconvenient visits to people’s homes under the banner of giving da‘wah. Focusing primarily on bringing the public to the mosques, despite not being qualified to educate attendees at their gatherings. Organizing annual gatherings in Bangladesh and placing great importance on attending them; perhaps even more importance than going for Hajj or ‘Umrah. Reading sections from the deviant book Fadaa’il al-A‘maal. A Side Note The condition of the book Fadaa’il al-A‘maal, which Jama’atu at-Tableegh commonly reads from, is outlined here.
