Does Backbiting Apply to Children?
Question: May Allฤh reward you. The questioner asks: What is the ruling on backbiting a young child?
Sheikh Abdurahman Al-Barrฤk แธฅafidhahullฤh:
If he understands praise and blame, then he comes under the general meaning of [backbiting โ which is] mentioning your brother in a way he dislikes. Whether he is old or young, elderly or a youth, as long as he dislikes it and understands praise and criticism, then it is considered backbiting.

When Sheikh Fawzฤn was asked a similar question, he stressed that:
"It is not allowed to mention something that a person dislikes โ whether the person is a child or an adult. Putting people down and speaking badly about them is not allowed, whether they are young or old. In fact, a child deserves even more kindness and compassion, because he is weak. He is more deserving of gentle treatment, mercy and good upbringing."
