One must be cautious of saying “I love you for the sake of Allah” to the opposite gender. They should not be deceived by the thought that it is harmless love for Allāh's sake, or that the woman is far away, older, or unrelated. Many have been misled by such ideas, resulting in harm to both their religion and worldly life.
People can become attached to someone of the opposite gender whom they have never seen, until their hearts are blinded to reality. Often, if they had seen them beforehand, they would have avoided the completely. As the saying goes: “The ear sometimes falls in love before the eye.”
This is why it's prohibited for unrelated men to visit, greet, console, or express intimate words to young women, out of fear of fitnah. Similarly, the phrase “I love you for the sake of Allāh” should be avoided if there is any expectation that it may lead to fitnah
Here is a formal English translation of the text:
Sheikh ’Abdurrazzaq Al-Badr ḥafidhahullāh was asked:
We hear on some television programmes that some women, when asking a question, say to the Shaykh, “I love you for the sake of Allāh.”
He responded:
This is not appropriate! It is not appropriate for a woman to say such a thing to a man, whether he is a Shaykh or not. She should not utter such words to a man except if he is her brother, father, husband, or someone similar, in which case there is no harm.
Regarding an unrelated man, this is a source fitnah. Therefore, it is not appropriate for her to say, “I love you for the sake of Allāh” to him.
If she loves him for the sake of Allāh, she should supplicate for him in private and also pray for all Muslims in private. This is sufficient.
