Benefit 67: Do we have to say Allāh rose above the throne in HIS ESSENCE (بذاته)?

Sheikh ’Uthaymeen raḥimahullāh said: “This addition (بذاته) is not necessary, because every action that Allāh attributes to Himself refers to His Essence without any doubt. That is why you don't say Allāh created the heavens بذاته, because He Himself created the heavens. Similarly, you don't say He descends to the lowest heaven بذاته. There is no need. As long as the action is attributed to Allāh, then it originates from Him. But it has come in the speech of some of the Salaf that they said, Allāh rose above the throne بذاته, and what they intended by this was a refutation against those who said Allah istawlaa (conquered) the throne. Likewise, they (Ahlus-Sunnah) said Allah Almighty is knowledgeable بذاته, in response to those who said Allah is knowledge in His Attributes - not in His Essence. Otherwise, the unequivocal principle is that everything that Allāh attributes to Himself refers to His Self... So there is no need to say that He rose above the throne بذاته, because Allah said, “He rose above the throne.” Who is He (referring to)? Allāh Himself. So there's no need. But if someone comes along and wants to raise doubts, like istawla means istawa and he says there's no such thing as a literal ascension, this is when we are forced to say بذاته. He descends to the lowest heaven when a third of the night remains. In this case, do we need to add and say He descends بذاته? It's not necessary as there's no need. Because Allah attributed the descending to His Self, so if He said He descends to the lowest heaven, it means He Himself descends, so there is no need to say بذاته. But when the Mu’aṭṭilah said that His command descends, Ahlus-Sunnah needed to say that He descends in His Essence. He descends in Being. As such, we say there's no need to say "He ascended the throne in HIS ESSENCE." There is no need for this because it is known by merely attributing the action to Allāh.
