Response: Walaal, the reason you sometimes see practicing brothers or sisters with a screw-face is because, from the moment they step outside their homes until they return, they are surrounded by all kinds of evil and temptation. Some even face those same struggles inside their own homes. Naturally, this weighs heavily on a person. They may feel powerless to change these evils with their hands, and they may be too afraid, embarrassed, or simply unable to address them with their words—so they fall back on the last level of Ēmān: hating it in their hearts. And when the heart carries that burden, it often shows outwardly on a person’s face and body language. That’s why you might see them walking around with a screw-face, even though they may not mean any harm. But you’ve raised a very valid point, walaal. Practicing brothers and sisters should strive to rise above their emotions and be warm, cheerful, and welcoming—especially around good people like yourself. Smiling is Sunnah, and it softens hearts, including their own. Even when dealing with those who aren’t practicing, it is far better to correct them with gentleness and a cheerful face than to advise them with a harsh expression.
