BENEFIT 503: The enemies of Islam study the religion in order to sow doubt and confusion among Muslims...this is nothing new!

Dr. ’AbdulAziz Ar-Rayyis waffaqahullah states:
"The killing of ʿUthmān occurred as a result of a Jewish conspiracy led by a Jew named ’Abdullāh ibn Saba', who pretended to be a Muslim. Thus, in the era of the Salaf — the time of the Companions — there were Jews who feigned Islam; therefore, be aware that in our own time there are many Jews who likewise pretend to be Muslims. Many of those who call themselves “jihadists,” or even some who appear among the Salafis, may in fact be impostors seeking to sow corruption — so be cautious.
Indeed, one of the esteemed scholars from Palestine told me that he once attended a master’s thesis defense at a Jewish university. The thesis was presented by a Jewish man, and its topic was Salafiyyah. After the defense concluded, the scholar asked the man, “Where did you obtain all this information?” The man replied, “I lived in Dammaj for five years, or something close to that.” He had lived among the Salafis in Dammaj, pretending to be one of them and enduring poverty, all in order to complete his research. There are, in fact, several similar stories that have been mentioned…" [end of quote]

Abu ’Uthman Abdullāh ibn Abdilqadir ḥafidhahullāh commented:
"This matter is neither strange nor new; however, one should speak to people in a manner they understand, for many become doubtful of goodness and its people because of such talk.
The infiltration of Jews and other enemies among the people of Islam is nothing unusual. As Allāh Almighty said:
{وَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ آمِنُوا بِالَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَجْهَ النَّهَارِ وَاكْفُرُوا آخِرَهُ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ}
“And a group from among the People of the Book said, ‘Believe in that which was revealed to those who believe at the beginning of the day, and disbelieve at its end, so that they may turn back.’” [Sūrah Āl ʿImrān, 3:72]

Sheikh Kāmil ḥafidhahullāh commented:
"There is nothing surprising about such stories. The Salafis keep their masjids open to anyone whose outward appearance reflects goodness and adherence to the Sunnah, for what lies within the hearts is known only to Allāh. They have nothing to conceal; their affairs are transparent. Thus, if a wicked person were to come and outwardly present himself as a devout Salafi, he might remain among them for years. If such a person fails to benefit from what he hears, sees, and reads, he may then write volumes attacking Islam and Salafiyyah. How, then, can we be astonished by this?
Even if we were to say, “Let us be cautious,” what means would we have to achieve that? And what could such a person possibly write? He would never speak the truth so long as he remains upon his own concealed faith. And if he writes falsehood and slander, he would not be the first to lie.
Islam and Salafiyyah are not shaken by a fabricated book or a falsified article. Rather, Allāh may test with such matters whomever He wills among His creation."
