An Appeal for Calm and Patience Amid the Unrest in Morocco

The brother asks: “Do you have any advice for our brothers in Morocco, where there are demonstrations, incitement, and acts of arson in the streets, to the extent that some essential affairs of the people have been disrupted?”
Sheikh Yahya ḥafidhahullāh:
These demonstrations are ḥarām. Much has already been said regarding their harms—the trials and turmoil they cause, the division among Muslims, the aggression, the stirring of resentment in hearts, and the severing of Islamic brotherhood among believers. They involve assaults on property, obstruction of roads, and clashes among people, as well as disobedience to those in authority in matters where obedience is required. Such acts are merely an imitation of the disbelievers and entail many harms.
Therefore, we advise them to fear Allāh and not to follow the attitude of “O you who go wandering while the people have returned (i.e. Do not act heedlessly when others have already learned their lesson).” The Muslim Ummah has already tasted the bitterness of such demonstrations: Yemen has suffered from them, as have Egypt, Tunisia, and other Muslim lands. These demonstrations have brought about great strife, torn apart the Muslims, and ruined nations. They are an imitation of the disbelievers and will bring no good. Those who engage in them will taste the same bitter consequences others have tasted.
They should turn back before matters worsen. If they persist, they will face the same outcome as others. Perhaps their end will be as Shaykh Al-Islām (may Allāh have mercy on him) said: “No people ever rose against their rulers except that their condition before the revolt was better than their condition after it.”
Thus, they will come to regret what results from such turmoil. Even if there are wrongs committed by their rulers, patience in such circumstances is better, more beneficial, and safer than the trials that come from demonstrations. Let them fear Allāh, speak rightly and justly, and Allāh is the One whose help is sought.
