PART 2: The Jahmiyyah ▪️History: The Jahmiyyah emerged in the first quarter of the second Islamic century at the hands of its founder, Al-Jahm ibn Ṣafwān At-Tirmidhī. ▪️Clarification: The Jahmiyyah is a speculative theological sect affiliated with Islam, considered among the extremists of the Murjiʾah. It appeared as a reaction to the Khawārij, who declared sinners to be disbelievers. The Jahmiyyah is a deviant sect in creed, known for their denial and interpretation (ta'weel) of the attributes of Allāh. Among their most notable beliefs are: denial of Allāh’s essential and active attributes as well as His reported attributes, the claim that the Qur'ān is created, the negation of human power and ability, and the assertion that Paradise and Hellfire will perish. ▪️Most Prominent Beliefs of the Jahmiyyah: 📌 Denial of Attributes: The Jahmiyyah deny all of Allah’s attributes, whether active attributes such as knowledge, power, and will, or essential attributes such as the face and hands. 📌 Createdness of the Qur’an: They held that the Qur’an is created, meaning that [the speech of Allāh] is originated and not eternal—an opinion contrary to the doctrine of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah. 📌 Denial of Human Ability: They argued that man is compelled in his actions, with no power to do anything, and is thus forced in all that he does, whether good or evil. 📌 Perishing of Paradise and Hellfire: They maintained that both Paradise and Hellfire will eventually perish and vanish after a period of time—again, a belief in contradiction to the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah. 📌 Irjāʾ: They inclined toward irjāʾ, the view that Eman is merely affirmation in the heart, and that sins do not harm so long as one believes, nor does disbelief avail even with good deeds. 📌 Belief in Indwelling and Union: Some of them believed that Allāh is present everywhere, and even in union with creation—positions in direct opposition to the creed of Ahlua-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah. ▪️Founder of the Jahmiyyah: Al-Jahm ibn Ṣafwān al-Tirmidhī—one of the figures associated with the Muʿtazilah—became known for this doctrine, which was ascribed to him. He was executed during the Umayyad era. ▪️Followers of the Jahmiyyah: The Jahmiyyah later fragmented into multiple sects. Some agreed with them in certain beliefs, while others disagreed. However, the core of their doctrine—the denial of Allāh’s attributes—remained the essence of their school. ▪️Conclusion: The Jahmiyyah is a deviant sect within Islam, characterised by the denial and reinterpretation of Allah’s attributes, and by contradicting the creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah. Their key doctrines include the denial of divine attributes, the claim of the Qur’an’s createdness, the denial of human ability, and the belief that Paradise and Hellfire will perish.
