BENEFIT 491: Guidelines for Effective Refutations

17 July 2025 • 1.51K views
Objectives of Scholarly Refutations: 1. Removing a confusion 2. Clarifying a misconception. 3. Refuting a false accusation. These are the noblest aims of scholarly refutations. Whoever confines themselves to these purposes has attained the highest level of knowledge-based rebuttals, and their refutations will carry significant value and impact—provided that three essential qualities are maintained: 1. Justice. 2. Fairness. 3. Truthfulness. Nevertheless, refutations are also legitimately undertaken for other purposes, including: 1. Repelling an aggressor. 2. Exposing a deceiver. 3. Advising a fellow Muslim. The more effort a person dedicates to scholarly refutations—by giving them their due care and placing them in their proper context—the greater the benefit derived from them. This should be accompanied by a strong commitment to three additional matters: 1. Supplicating to Allāh for success, guidance, and support. 2. Seeking refuge in Allāh from the evil of one's soul and the consequences of one's actions. 3. Exercising deliberation and considering the potential benefits and harms. ✒️ Abu Sulayman Salman bin Salih Al-‘Imad Thursday, 22nd Muharram, 1447 AH
