BENEFIT 472: A Sign of Foolishness: Rejecting an Opponent's Argument Before It's Heard

A benefit taken from Abu Atiyyah's lecture regarding Ṣulḥ Ḥudaybiyyah: "...He (Budail) said: 'if you want I can relay this information to you.' فَقَالَ «سُفَهَاؤهم لَا حَاجَة لَنَا أَن تُخْبِرَنَا عَنْهُ بِشِي» The fools from among them said: "We don't need to hear anything that you have to say about him." وَقَالَ ذَوُو الرَأِي مِنْهُمْ And those who were wise among them said: «هَاتِ مَا سَمْعت» "Let us hear what you have to say," i.e. what you heard from this man. And then he relayed the information that he heard from the Prophet ﷺ. Now what do you benefit from this? You benefit that: it is from hastiness and foolishness to rush to reject what you may hear from someone you have a problem with. Just because it came from that person and you dislike them, "I don't want to hear what they have to say!" Does this not happen to us alot of the time? It happens to us. We're being moved by emotion as opposed to being moved by the maslaha and the interest and gain. And this is worse off when it is someone who's a Muslim like you, you're practicing Muslim brother, they're offering you some form of an agreement, let's sit down, let's talk. And they say, I don't have time for this, I don't want to waste my time, I don't want to hear what they have to say. And the Shaytan, he uses this as fuel to create more fitnah. And a sheikh AbdulMuhsin Al-Abbad in his explanation of Sahih Al-bukhari he mentions: السفهاء بادروا إلى الرد... The foolish from among them they hasten towards rejecting, so it's a sign of foolishness. So, if you have this tendency, perhaps it's from your nature to do this, then ask Allah to remove this from you, so you become calm and collected and from those who are wise; listening to what a person has to say before you just reject it. And it comes in the hadith of Anas —and it has supporting narrations— The Prophet ﷺ said: ((التأني من الله والعجلة من الشيطان)) "That being careful, cautious, this is from Allah." Allah puts this in a person. "And hastiness, this is from the Shaitan" Ar-Rajeem, is from the devil, who causes this hastiness among the people."
