BENEFIT 465: Boycotting Parents For a Greater Interest

Question: Esteemed Sheikh, what is the ruling on abandoning one’s parents if it serves a beneficial purpose? Sheikh Fawzan hafidahullah: It is not permissible to abandon one’s parents(1) except in specific cases: if they are disbelievers, as Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said, “And I will distance myself from you and from whatever you invoke besides Allah, and I will supplicate to my Lord.” Or if they are sinful individuals—not disbelievers—committing major sins, and you have advised them yet they did not accept your advice. In such a case, if boycotting them would serve as a deterrent and lead them to cease their sinful behaviour, then it is permissible to do so.
