BENEFIT 465: Boycotting Parents For a Greater Interest
9 May 2025 • 1.31K views
Question: Esteemed Sheikh, what is the ruling on abandoning one’s parents if it serves a beneficial purpose?
Sheikh Fawzan hafidahullah:
It is not permissible to abandon one’s parents(1) except in specific cases: if they are disbelievers, as Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said, “And I will distance myself from you and from whatever you invoke besides Allah, and I will supplicate to my Lord.” Or if they are sinful individuals—not disbelievers—committing major sins, and you have advised them yet they did not accept your advice. In such a case, if boycotting them would serve as a deterrent and lead them to cease their sinful behaviour, then it is permissible to do so. However, if boycotting would not benefit them, then you must continue advising them and maintaining dutifulness and kindness toward them.
